New Skin Tips and Informations

Initially the baby skin is covered with a yellowish-white, greasy material. It is easily washed off in the first bath. Incompatibility between mother’s and child’s blood group can cause the baby skin to be stained yellow. In such cases, the doctor immediately takes steps.

After the first bath a red and raw skin appears. Minor abrasion and raw areas ae vulnerable to bacterial infections. Blue patches in certain areas are visible initially, but they disappear on their own.The extra fairness in the natal stages should not be interpreted as fair complexion. It is due to absence of enough pigment (melanin) which develops over the week, bringing the normal color to the baby skin.

Top 4 Ways to Baby Your Skin

There's good news---cleansing skin care can be learned with very little effort. We're all busy people who barely have time to toast a piece of bread in the morning. But, don't worry, the four tips I'll lay out in this article are easy. For glowing skin that makes others jealous, follow this skin cleansing regimen.

Baby it - With a Gentle Washing

Many people rough up their face every morning. Using a wash cloth and soap and scrubbing like mad is not proper cleansing skin care. First, wash cloths are just too harsh for delicate face skin. And most soap contains strong chemicals that strip away oils, leaving skin dry.

Instead, use a milder soap and gently massage it onto your face with your fingers. Or you can use an active cleansing mask about twice a month. I recommend doing both. One more thing, after washing, don't towel off your face like you would your body. Just pat it until it's dry.

Baby it - With a Cold Shower

Wait! Don't stop reading yet, let me explain. A long, hot shower, while it feels soooo good, actually removes essential oils, dries out skin, and may cause irritation. Hot water also opens up pores. So if you're not using a showerhead water filter, you'll absorb a lot of the chlorine that's in tap water. Chlorine dries skin like you wouldn't believe.

So, for the best skin cleansing, take a cold or a lukewarm shower. And if you can, buy a shower water filter to avoid exposure to chlorine. Just think how alert you'll be after a brisk cold shower!?!

Baby it - By Avoiding Synthetic Chemicals

Almost all perfume, cologne, cosmetics, and skin cream contain irritating chemicals. When considering a cleansing skin product, look closely at the label. If there is something you can't pronounce or an ingredient that reminds you of chemistry class, beware.

Baby it - By Moisturizing Regularly

Moisturizers help skin look supple and radiant by locking in water. Along with using a daily moisturizer, you can use things like deep cleansing masks and deep hydrating masks. A skin cleansing routine with all three would be very powerful and give your skin an attention-getting radiance.

The four skincare tips in this article, if followed, give you a great "baby-it" foundation. Just remember; only buy products that contain natural substances. At my website, I discuss the most powerful natural ingredients in cleansing skin care.

Natural Skin Care for Your Children

The skin of your children is soft, wrinkle free, supple, smooth and usually unblemished. "Smooth as a baby's bottom", is an expression used to indicate that some object or material has an extremely smooth finish or is smooth to the touch, just like a baby's bottom.

Young skin is smooth and has a youthful appearance - of course, it's young. As children grow up and their bodies start to mature, so to does their skin - teenagers often get acne and in some cases this can even lead to permanent scaring on their faces.

But there is another less obvious aging process that has a long term rather than a short term effect on the health and vitality of our skin - the sun.

Did you know, that 50% of exposure to the sun is done before we are 20? As young kids, we spend vast amounts of time outside and play in the sun, on the beach, in the snow, on playgrounds and so on. The amount of UV radiation that our skin is exposed to is huge.

The effects of this exposure however, is not obvious except for the occasional sunburn, but once that heals, there is little evidence of long-term damage. That is unless you could look below the surface of the skin.

The damage of UV radiation is focused on the dermis of our skin, this is where it has the greatest impact and that is where the long-term damage accumulates. Yes, the damage is cumulative. More UV exposure, more damage.

The media has helped to promote awareness of the risks of skin cancer due to excessive exposure to the sun, but rarely do we hear about other factors, such as premature signs of aging of our skin. Break down of collage, dehydration, and so on.

Often it is not until we reach our late 20's or early 30's that we start seeing the first little fine lines and begin to think about our skin care on a more serious level. But by now, most of the damage has already been done and all we are doing is to try to prevent the inevitable.

So, what should we do? Well, the first step is to start educating our children. Babies are used to having creams and lotions put on their bodies. So why do we stop when the nappy period of their lives is over?

It is at this point that children should be encouraged to put natural creams and lotions on their bodies after they have a shower or a bath. From the time they go to kindergarten, if not earlier, they will be spending many hours outdoors and sure we use the sunscreens, hats and generally try to keep the sun off their bare skin, but at the same time, we should encourage the use of natural skin care creams and lotions to protect, nourish, hydrate and cleanse their young and tender skin.

For example, introducing your children to using natural soaps rather than the harsh, commercially available types, will help their skin maintain its natural pH balance and thus the skin's Acid Mantel.

Of course when they get grease or oil on their skin you may need to use a more powerful cleaner, but there are plenty of natural soaps available for all skin cleansing jobs. Wildcrafted's Heavenly Hand & Body Wash is perfectly able to get rid of stubborn dirt and grime and at the same time it is kind and nourishing to their skin.

Teach your children to use natural hand creams. The skin on our hands gets more ware and tear then any other part using a good hand cream will help to keep their skin soft, supple and healthy.

Teach them to use a natural moisturising cream on their face and on their body. Choose a natural moisturiser that's suitable for Normal skin, as children do not tend to have oily or dry skin, this usually starts around the time of puberty.

If you continue teaching your children from an early age to use natural skin care products on their skin, they will naturally continue this process and their skin will thank you and them in the long term.

Right Skin Care Products for Your Baby

Picking the right type of skin care products for your baby is very important because a baby's skin is much more sensitive and delicate compared to an adult. For a start, you can choose products that are specially formulated for babies. The ingredients used in these products are milder compared with regular products, so the chances of your little ones getting rashes or other types of skin irritations are greatly reduced.

However, there are still chances that your child will get skin irritations even when using baby care products. Different products will have different types of ingredients in them, and some even have colorings and fragrances added in an attempt by manufacturers to make the products more attractive to boost sales.

If your baby starts developing skin irritations, the first thing you need to do is inspect the products used. Read the ingredients label to see if the products contain any coloring or chemicals that may be the cause of the problem. The easiest way is to switch to another totally different brand to see if the problem persists.

You may want to consider switching to all natural skin care products for your child which is much safer to use. You still need to be careful when choosing all natural products because even some so called natural products have chemicals added in to make it more marketable.

Besides skin care products, you have to be careful with the products used to clean your baby's clothes. There are also detergents sold in the market which are specially formulated for washing kids' clothes. Make sure that the clothes are all washed thoroughly to remove any traces of detergents and chemicals.

Put in a little bit of time and effort when it comes to selecting the most appropriate baby products for your little ones. This will ensure that your child will not develop any skin irritations or rashes and spare both of you all the trouble in the long run.

Sensitive Skin Care Tips

The fact is only a few people have a perfectly soft, smooth, and healthy skin. Most of us have to suffer from various skin problems. We regret the times that we forgot to value our skin's health. And now we can see the importance of having healthy skin.

We commonly suffer from oily or dry skin, blemishes, wrinkles and fine lines, and acne. The good thing is there is lots of available skin care solutions that can fix any of these skin care problems. But the bad news is skin will become sensitive if it is regularly treated with chemicals and other substances.

A good sensitive skin care is recommended to prevent skin damages. In taking care of sensitive skin, you have to be more careful in applying products. Even natural ingredients can cause redness or allergic reaction. That's why the first thing to do is to consult your dermatologist. Since your skin can be easily damaged, you can't just try which product will work and which will not.

Sensitive skin care includes eating nutritious fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals. Eating these foods will keep the natural nutrients in your skin. For instance, fruits that are rich in Vitamin A, D, C, and K are also excellent antioxidants which can help the skin to remove the harmful free radicals we all come into contact with living in our environments.

Another sensitive skin care is to avoid hot baths. Instead, go for warm baths or quick cold or luke warm shower. Use mild soaps and avoid strong detergents. You have to pat dry your skin, instead of rubbing it dry. Doing so can cause skin cell damages.

You can also apply baby oil with jojoba extracts to moisturize your skin. This is a good alternative for hydrating lotions since baby oils are designed for the delicate skin of babies.

My skin tends to be sensitive to many products. Check out my web site listed below to discover what I've found that doesn't cause me any problems.

Your Skin Care Cream

The skin care industry has the public convinced that their products will bring you a glowing complexion, reduce wrinkles and reduce discoloration. However, the cosmetic industry is not regulated and so long as they list the ingredients on the bottle as required by the FDA they can make all the claims they like. Additionally, many skin care companies use the term "Natural" when in reality many products contain less than 1% of a natural ingredient such as aloe Vera, or other essential oils.

In reality many cosmetics and baby products contain harmful ingredients which are detrimental to your health or your babies. The United Nations Environmental Program estimates that approximately 70,000 chemicals are in common use across the world with 1,000 new chemicals being introduced every year. Of all the chemicals used in cosmetics, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has reported that nearly 900 are toxic - although other groups attack that figure as being far too conservative.

Below are a few guidelines when selecting a skin care product.

Talc is commonly used to dry, freshen and deodorize the skin. It is a mineral consisting of hydrated magnesium silicate. Research has suggested that women who use talcum powder for personal hygiene between their legs are more likely to get ovarian cancer. It is thought that talc may travel up into the vagina, through the cervix into the womb, along the fallopian tubes, to the ovaries, causing irritation and inflammation, resulting in cancerous changes. Additionally, inhalation of talc may irritate the respiratory system.

Triclosan is an antimicrobial chemical found in hand washes, toothpastes and household products; it may kill 'friendly bacteria' which help with digestion and protect the body from more serious infection. There is cause for concern that the overuse of anti-bacterial products inhibits the normal process of the immune system to ward off germs.

Phthalates is used to make plastics flexible, they are found in shampoos, moisturizers, nail polishes and hair sprays. Animal studies have suggested links with testicular abnormalities in male offspring exposed to these chemicals in the womb. Phthalates like all chemical processed ingredients in cosmetics are absorbed through the skin or inhaled.

Sodium lauryl sulphate was originally used as an industrial degreasing; it is widely used in shampoos, bubble baths and other washing products to product foam. This chemical can irritate eyes, skin and mouth.

Aluminium salts (eg: aluminium chlorohydrate) is used in antiperspirants and deodorants, they dissolve onto the skin to create a coating over sweat glands and so reduce the amount of sweat that is released. There have been concerns that this chemical may be related to breast cancer.

Parabens (eg: methylparaben (E218), ethylparaben (E214)) are used as preservatives in cosmetics, food and household products, they may mimic the female hormone, estrogen. Concerns focus on a possible link to breast cancer, when used in deodorants.

There is a growing list of synthetic ingredients manufacturers are adding to their products every day which are or will be detrimental to your health sometime in the future. Therefore, when purchase your next cosmetic or baby products read the label carefully. Select natural products made from botanicals and essential oils for the safest skin care products.

Baby Health Care

As a new parent it is your responsibility to provide the very best baby health care for your infant. Every parent wants the best for their child and one way to do this is to provide quality nutrition and natural products for your baby.

When it comes to the well being of your baby, using good quality baby health care products is very important. Whether you are looking for skin care products or natural food choices, always pick the best which you can afford.

When it comes to feeding your baby this might entail preparing home made fresh foods. This really is not as difficult as it might sound. Foods like pureed apples, bananas, squash and carrots are easy to prepare and simply freeze. Making foods ahead of time can free up precious meal preparation chores and allow you to sit down and eat with your family.

Incorporating a few simple tools into your kitchen can allow you to create wonderful fresh foods very quickly. Items such as a baby food grinder or mill, a small investment can really free up some time here. This becomes very handy when your baby starts to eat meats, it makes grinding up soft meats so easy.

Using baby health care skin or bath products is important too. Always read the labels on the products and make sure they contain the least amount of chemicals as possible. Nowadays there are more and more products becoming available which use natural ingredients. They might be a bit more expensive, but they will last much longer. With many of these baby health care products a small amount actually goes a long way.

Bear in mind that some products like talc powder can actually cause lung problems if inhaled by your infant. No one wants to cause a health issue by accident. Always test a small amount of the product on yourself. If you have a reaction to it, chances are your baby will too.

Look for products which are natural, something like lavender oil is great for your baby. Lavender will actually help them to relax and sleep better. It has also been used as a great mosquito repellent.

One of the easiest ways to keep your baby's health care in good condition is to always keep your doctor's appointments. Even if your baby is fine, don't skip out on any visits, there could be an issue that you aren't aware of, and early detection is key in many childhood ailments.

You want to keep in mind that baby health care is important in all areas. This would include their nutritional needs as they grow, to the products which you use on their skin. Another key area is to be aware of your household cleaners and how these could affect your baby's health. Care should be taken to use environmentally friendly cleaners at all times. Try using these products when your baby is sleeping to prevent them inhaling any fumes.

Summer Skin Care For Baby Eczema

Summer is here again and for many it brings relief from the some of the dryness of eczema prone skin. There are things that can be problematic, but if we know what to look out for it can make summer a little easier on sensitive baby skin.

    Sun Creams for Eczema

We all know the importance of using Sun creams especially in babies but finding a Sun cream that does not make eczema worse can often be tricky.

There are 2 types of sun protection, chemical and mineral.

Chemical Sun creams - These contain a number of chemicals that are absorbed into the skin to help protect you from harmful rays of the sun. These are most of the widely available Sun creams as they are absorbed into the skin, these kinds of cream can cause problems for sensitive eczema skin.

Mineral sun creams - (those containing things like Zinc or Titanium oxide) form a barrier on the skin. These are more often found in 'natural' sun creams, or preparations for sensitive skin. These creams can be a little harder to apply, and as they sit on the skin can leave a white sheen that some people may not like. Examples of mineral based creams are Badger and Lavera Sun creams.

Combination Creams - A mix of chemical absorbers and mineral screens.

Again, as with everything finding a sun cream to suit your child's skin is trial and error, there is often the added problem that many sun creams contain detergents like SLS to mix the oil and water into a cream, perfumes and preservatives that can also cause reactions in sensitive skin. Natural creams may contain ingredients unsuitable for children with allergies so it's important to check labels. We found success with Badger Sun cream last year, it's very natural and contains no preservatives or detergents, it was great for my little one and very moisturising, though it does leave lots of white blobs. Jason's Sun cream and Lavera products worked well for us too. It is possible your Doctor or Dermatologist may be able to advise or give a prescription for a sun cream they feel may be suitable for your child, so it's also worth checking with them.

    Swimming and Sand

Even tiny babies love water and I think more than any parent we feel the conflict of wanting to protect out sensitive baby's yet let them do all the things that children love and enjoy.
Paddling pools in the shade are great for hot days, if your child has very sensitive skin you may want to use their sun cream on siblings and friends too as much of the cream will end up in the pool water. Swimming pools for most eczema sufferers are ok, you may find you need to use moisturiser before and after and always shower skin with fresh water on leaving the pool. Cooler pools often contain less chlorine than warmer pools.

Sea water is very salty so may sting open or very inflamed eczema so be cautious at first, if it's well tolerated just make sure to rinse the skin well after paddling and moisturise well. Sand gets everywhere and on a well moisturised and sun creamed baby can be impossible to get off without lots of rinsing. If your little one loves sand try to make sure that cream is applied a while before he get's near it. Unless skin is open or very cracked it shouldn't be too problematic, but beware if skin is weeping of open it may be very irritating, stingy and problematic to remove.

    Coping with heat

Many of us know how heat can make our babies feel itchier and on hot days it can be hard to keep little ones cool. Eczema can be exacerbated by sweating so skin creases on the insides of the elbows or behind the knees can become inflamed sore and itchy. If you find this is the case with your eczema baby, then bathing the areas at intervals threw the day with damp cotton wool before applying their moisturiser may help keep them more comfortable.

Light cotton clothes are ideal for hot weather. If you find little ones getting hot and itchy while travelling try terry towelling covers that can go into buggies and car seats to absorb moisture, I'm sure a clean towel placed into a buggy would do the same thing. As with any small children try and keep them in the shade were possible and out of the midday sun. Summer is a joyous time for children and their parents, with a little forethought and preparation you should be able to enjoy the warm and sunny days with your little ones.

Baby Acne Treatment

Baby acne affects around 20% of newly born babies. Most parents panic to see redness on the cheeks or nose of the baby during the early weeks or months. This redness looks like acne or rashes but this goes off easily without treatment and will clear up within a few weeks.

This baby skin condition occurs due to possible lingering hormones from the mother. These hormones affect the baby's sebaceous glands and thus cause small, reddish papules on the cheeks, which looks worst when the baby is upset, and crying.

If the acne lingers for months, it could be good to consult the pediatrician to detect if the rash could be symptom of other infant diseases. Some rashes look like acne but they may be other symptoms.

There are some baby medications, viral diseases or allergic reactions that cause rashes on the cheeks and may be confused with baby acne. If the baby develops any rashes after any prescribed medication, it is best to bring the baby back to the doctor for proper care.

Baby acne could get worst when irritated by the spills of the infant formula or baby spits. Skin may be allergic to some fabrics or detergents too. Other babies have more sensitive skins so ordinary soap, lotion or creams could just irritate their acne some more.

Unless there is more to the acne than the normal rashes, there really is no treatment necessary because it couldn't harm the baby. Just wash it gently with plain water regularly without scrubbing. The acne will go away before you know it.

3 Homemade Remedies and 4 Must Have Accessories For Their Bath

We all have to be careful what shampoo is used on our dogs because some of them can actually irritate their skin. Just because a shampoo is good for us humans does not mean it's good for your dog. So why not make your own? Here are some tips on making home remedies for your dogs grooming purposes for a fraction of the cost.

    1. Shampoo

A very good home remedy is mixing Aloe Vera gel with water. It is so mild on your dog's skin plus it makes their coats very shiny. Just slightly dilute a handful of Aloe with water and work the mixture into your dog's DRY coat. Rinse it well with warm water when finished. If it bothers you that it doesn't foam up, you can add a dab of baby shampoo to the mixture. (baby shampoo is gentle even for dogs)

    Cost: Under $5.00

    2. All-natural Rinse

If you insist on having a store-bought shampoo, mix up an all-natural rinse and work it into your dogs coat following the shampoo. It actually restores the ph balance of your dog's skin and removes any excess shampoo. Mix one teaspoon apple cider vinegar with one pint of warm water. Work it into your dogs coat and rinse with warm water.

    Cost: Under $5.00

    3. Keep Your Dog's Dry Skin Under Control

There are so many dogs that have dry skin. This can be anything from having allergies to having a bad diet. Help them out by making a homemade remedy of rinsing your dog with a little bit of chamomile tea. Boil the water, make the tea and when it cools down pour it over your dog. It sooths your dogs skin without having any kind of oily residue. You can even rub a small amount of olive oil on your dog if he has severe dry skin. Towel him off with a paper towel.

    Cost: Under $1

Give Your dog His Own Bath Accessories

    1. Wash Cloths

It's a good idea to always use a washcloth for your dog's face. This prevents you from getting any shampoo into their eyes or ears. They are already stressed, so don't make it worse by taking unnecessary chances. Have at least two washcloths on hand at all times. Cost $2 - $4

    2. Towels

This is obviously one of the most important accessories when giving your dog a bath. You need to have at least two towels because dogs always seem to soak through the first one very fast. You can go to Target or Walmart and get towels for very good prices so getting two will still stay within your budget and your dog will have his very own towels. Cost: $3 - $6

    3. A Loofah for Your Dog?

Yes, believe it or not, this is just as good for your dog as it is for you. It will help you get rid of loose excess hair which makes it much easier for you to brush them after their bath. Get the loofah wet and start stroking your pet from their head all the way down to their tail. This is done after shampooing but before you do the rinse. You will be amazed at how much excess hair will be going down the drain instead of getting all over your home. Cost: Under $2

    4. Bathmat

Buy your dog a nice soft bathmat to put down after his bath and then cover him with his towel. You want them to stay warm. Then watch their energy soar! They may not like a bath but they sure do love feeling clean.

Skin Care For Detergent Contact Dermatitis Care

I have had a contact dermatitis all of my life. It surfaced most when I was a baby, then again when I was a teenager and again when I had my own small family. My first recommendation is that you get the opinion of a specialist. I made the mistake of going with the advice from a GP and although well meaning, every GP I have seen has known very little about how to deal with Dermatitis except how to dispense oral and topical steroids. I went misdiagnosed for almost half my life. I didn't know what was triggering my dermatitis really.

If you do have sensitive skin, please don't shun medical advice or the topical and or oral steroids. They help to clear your skin. However, I have found that there are many things that I can do to make the flare ups of my skin much less.

    1. I react to most moisturisers even the base to most moisturisers which is glycerine. I have found that what I like to call the 'Cleopatra treatment' works well which is to bathe the skin on my face and hands in warm water with olive oil and full cream milk. All of the products that I now use on my skin come from my pantry. Many others have had excellent success with honey. I find it too drying on my skin. Be sure to choose a 'lite' or extra virgin olive oil. If the olive oil is to heavy or you use too much, it will clog pores.

    2. Shower less - OK, within reason. However, at the height of one of my breakouts I was having two long hot showers daily. I definitely only have one shower. The dermatologist advised that the chemicals in the water supply would also be affecting my dermatitis and so for that time when I was in recovery, I stretched out to two showers over 3 days.

    3. One of the biggest battles I have with my skin is to keep it from drying out. The drying out encourages the skin to be more sensitive and to react more. I recommend to pat gently with a towel after the shower as this is when the skin is at its softest.

    4. I only exfoliate once per month even though some people say that it should be a weakly practice. I only exfoliate with a glove. Never with any lotions etc.

Taking good care of your skin will take some time to show as the skin grows in a 30 day cycle and so it will take time for the damaged skin to be replaced with newer and more healthy and strong skin.

Safe Baby Skin Care

Naturally Safe Baby Products - demands are on the increase. Many parents are turning to organic products to Naturally Care for Babies Skin. Is this a consumer trend or is this a decision based on something more important?

The commonsense approach is to minimize contact with potentially harmful chemicals. This is good commonsense. Health conscious parents are choosing to reduce unnecessary chemical exposure for their children where-ever possible.

The largest organ of the human body is actually the skin. It is no surprise that one of the biggest concerns many new parents experience is how to protect their babies' very new, soft & delicate skin.

In fact babies' skin should be well cared for as it can have an impact on their health. A baby has a great deal of growing to do. Their lungs, eyes & internal organs require time to strengthen & develop. Do you think they are prepared to cope with potentially toxic chemicals unnecessarily?

    Non-Toxic Baby Care V's Non-Natural

The benefit of knowledge is that it can prevent you falling victim to some brilliant marketing techniques. The word "Natural" is a great way to effect our emotions. Doesn't that provide us with feelings of security & confidence?

The term Natural indicates that it contains a natural substance - the product normally will still contain non-natural ingredients. It is the word "Natural" that is designed to be the focal point.

    "Certified Organic" Baby Skincare

This term provides absolute assurance that the agricultural, harvesting & processing method is totally without contact to any toxic chemical substances. No synthetic chemicals, artificial colors, fragrances & preservatives. The safety aspect of worldwide standards dictates that "Certified Organic" products are truly natural.

Green Baby Body Care or Potential Poison

The chemical Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a surfactant useful in the removal of oil. Various health reports have raised concerns regarding its safety.

It is commonly used as an engine degreaser & does a thorough job. Such degreasers have an extremely high concentration of this substance when compared to the amount contained in skin cleansers etc.

Although various ingredients may not be considered life threatening, it makes good sense to reduce the level of exposure when possible. Especially when considering that safe alternative products are readily attainable.

Propylene Glycol - You may have come across this product previously. It has a great many uses. Commonly used as an anti-freeze for boats, aircraft & vehicles.

It is a necessary ingredient in solvent acrylics, stains, dyes & brake fluid. Is it sounding like something you would choose to apply to a baby's fragile & delicate skin!

Please draw comfort from the documented fact that it is considered to be "Generally Recognized as Safe" may be used as a food additive, cosmetics & skin care products.

That is "generally reassuring" in a rather "general" sort of way. So cast away any real or imagined fear because you can really feel "generally safe" while using it!

Material Safety Data Sheets are provided with the purchase of chemical products. These sheets provide safety instructions in case of emergency.

It is a skin irritant & can affect the liver and kidneys.
        Avoid contact with the skin.
        Minor eye irritation.

Obviously that is referring to high concentrations of this chemical. But many thinking individuals have drawn the conclusion that naturally safe alternative ingredients are available, why add anything that has been considered as potentially hazardous.

Mineral Oil - it may even create the concept that it is healthy & natural. This ingredient is used in many baby skin care goods. But think again!

It is definitely a natural product. A by-product of Crude oil - that may be appropriate for use in our motor vehicles. Does it provide you the same confidence when considering lotions that are applied to a new baby's skin?

Whether a product is absorbed through the skin depends on a variety of factors. The liver is responsible to break down chemicals for elimination.

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential for interference with the respiratory system, why risk it. You may be aware that hydrocarbons have been considered as carcinogenic (increasing the risk of certain cancers).

Natural Baby Care for Newborn - You Decide

Such controversial ingredients may appear to make good business sense when profit is the prime focus. Safety doesn't appear to rank all that highly, these substances are relatively inexpensive & an available resource. It offers the potential to generate a high cash flow. The fact that profit is involved, does not exactly build much confidence in the safety aspect of the product.

    Organic Baby Items or Conventional!

Three Safe and Natural Baby Skin Care Products

As a new mother, the last thing you want to worry about are the dangers posed by the ingredients in the products you use in the care of your newborn. A lot of young mothers believe that the baby products we see on store shelves must be safe, otherwise they wouldn't be there right? In an ideal world this would be true, but we do not live in an ideal world. It is our responsibility as mothers to ensure that the baby care products we are using are safe for our little ones.

The skin of a newborn baby is extremely delicate, as you are probably aware. In the first few month of life, your baby's immune system is still developing and adapting to life outside the womb. Exposure to chemicals and other potential allergens in the first few months of life can cause a lifetime of allergy-related health complications. Harsh chemicals and fragrances commonly found in baby skin care products can cause skin irritation, dryness, and rashes. The old adage "Less is More" most certainly applies when it comes to skin care for your little one. The following are three of my favorite organic baby skin care products:

Erbaviva Baby Shampoo is absolutely wonderful! It is extremely gentle on your newborn's skin, cleansing and protecting without the use of harsh chemicals and detergents. It contains absolutely no harsh, irritating chemicals. It's main ingredients include olivoil glutinate (a derivative of olive oil), wheat proteins and quilaja tree bark extract, and it is scented ever-so-slightly with organic lavender and chamomile.

The Weleda Baby Starter Kit is a perfect introduction to the Calendula baby collection. Weleda is a well-respected company from Germany, known for producing some of the highest quality organic skin care products in the world. The starter kit includes Calendula Baby Cream, Diaper Care, Shampoo / Body Wash, Baby Lotion, and Baby Oil. This wonderful wee collection is great for travel and stores well in a diaper bag, too.

Dr. Bronner's Unscented Baby Mild Soap is a must-have for your newborn's skin care needs. It is free from perfumes, dyes, chemicals, and synthetic ingredients of any sort, and is comprised of 100% biodegradable, vegetable-based ingredients. It is USDA certified organic, and fair trade certified. Key ingredients include organic olive, coconut, hemp, and jojoba oils. You'll both feel great after using this wonderful baby skin care product from Dr. Bronner's.

Skin Care For a Younger You

Every three to four weeks, your body will shed its entire skin, as part of the natural process of renewal, but some dead cells hang around, making your skin appear rough, scaly and discoloured. Most of your body you can cover up, but your face is on view 24/7. Time to give nature a boost, and pamper yourself into the bargain! Try these simple exfoliates to give you fresher, younger-looking skin!
    1. Combine one tablespoon of raw sugar with one teaspoon of olive oil and massage gently over wrinkles and fine lines, finally wiping face and neck clean, and rinsing with cool water. Smooth, baby!
    2. Mix a packet of instant oatmeal with cold water, and rub gently into face and neck. This mix will gently exfoliate and clear surplus oil from your skin.
    3. After showering, and while still damp, gently rub sea-salt over your face, rinsing with cool water. This will shift all those dead cells! This can be used for the whole body.
    4. For an extra-special facial scrub, combine two tablespoons of dry oatmeal with one tablespoon ground almonds and one tablespoon of raw honey, then massage gently onto your face. Rinse thoroughly to deep cleanse your pores.
For all the above treatments, it is important not to rub too hard. Any pressure that stretches the skin will aggravate sagging and wrinkles. Better to do little and often than the occasional "sandblasting" session. The best way is to use your finger tips in light circular motions all over the face and be gentle with the eye area as the skin there is many times thinner than elsewhere, so it needs a softer touch. Cool, rather than warm water, will give better results as it helps to tighten the skin.
How about some non-toxic skin toners to bring your facial skin to life!
    1. Put one whole cucumber through your juicer and strain the juice, add just two teaspoons of raw honey, mix well and bottle the mix. Use by dabbing lightly with cotton wool on your face and neck, morning and night. Allow to dry, then rinse off. This mix will keep in the fridge for about a week.
    2. Blend one peeled and cored apple with one tablespoon of raw honey until smooth. Gently apply to your face, and leave for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off and note how bright your skin looks!
    3. Mash half an avocado, and mix with 1/4 cup of raw honey until creamy, then apply to face and neck. Leave for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse with cool water. Don't waste the other half; eat it promptly with prawns and a green leaf salad!
    4. Tighten and tone with the strained juice of 1/2 a lemon and one egg white, beat together for about 2 to 3 minutes, then apply to your face. Watch your eyes, this will sting! Leave for half an hour, and then rinse off with warm water. You will see an improvement in tautness and skin tone right away!
The following is an excellent face cream that can also be used for the whole body, and it consists of well-known ingredients guaranteed to renew your complexion by their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. It may look like a lot ingredients to buy, but they are true skin foods and well worth the effort for the benefits provided. Combine best quality 100% organic pure co enzyme Q10 cream, (alternatively called ubiquinone) with cocoa butter (for that irresistible chocolate aroma) a few drops of frankincense essential oil, and the contents of about 6 vitamin E capsules (a pinhole one end and a good squeeze) with either a few drops of jojoba or coconut oil. Mix well, and then apply all over.
The mix is nutrient rich, lasts for ages in the fridge and hasn't cost you $100 a tub. Other good ingredients for your own custom made face creams include essential oils, shea butter, natural collagen, aloe vera, almond oil, wheat germ oil, glycerine and green tea. Have fun experimenting!

Caring For Your Baby's Skin

According to Professor Michael Cork, Head of Academic Dermatology at University of Sheffield Medical School and world renowned expert on paediatric eczema and skin care, children's skin allergies have increased dramatically since the 1950s and now one in five children suffer from eczema. This has coincided with the rapid rise in baby skincare products.

So how can you protect your child from developing skin irritations or eczema? It all starts with your daily skin care routine - the right routine.

Walk down the aisle of any supermarket, chemist or baby boutique and the choice in skincare is overwhelming. You are inundated with soap, shampoo, moisturising lotions, creams, ointments, bubble bath, bath oil, powders and the list goes on. How do you choose?

For many parents the two most important factors behind their choices in skincare are performance and value for money. But there are points parents need to consider when choosing a product is their baby's skin.

    Check list

-How much do you want to spend? Spending more doesn't necessarily mean a better product.
-Do you want to use synthetic or a natural, organic product? All products are potential irritants regardless of whether they are synthetic, natural or organic.
-Does your baby have any allergies to peanuts, soy, wheat or milk products? Some products contain these ingredients eg: Sweet Almond Oil, Soybean Oil, Cassein, Peanut Oil, Wheatgerm oil.
-Do you have a family history of eczema, asthma or hay fever? The chances of your child having eczema will increase by 30% if you do and 50% to 80% if both parents do.

When you have answered these questions you should have narrowed the field considerably. Where to now?

    Causes of skin irritations

Fragrances - One of the biggest causes of skin irritations in babies is fragrance, they can be either synthetic or natural.

Essential oils - Natural, highly fragrant oils extracted from plants mainly used for its therapeutic properties but these oils are highly potent and can be irritating to a baby's skin.

Colours - Again natural or synthetic they are both potential irritants. Does baby really need bright pink bubble bath?

Soap and surfactants - are high foaming like bubble bath the higher the foam the more drying they can be to the skin. One common culprit is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. It receives a great deal of bad press but did you know it is actually derived from coconuts (remember what I said about natural and organic products being potential irritants)? Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is commonly used in bath wash and shampoo products for its cleansing action. As it is high foaming it has been associated with skin dryness and skin irritation.

Preservatives - products that combine water and oil need a preservative, without it various bacteria and fungus can pollute the product within months, but again preservatives can be potential skin irritants.

So armed with the correct information, shopping for your baby's skincare will no longer be a hassle.

    LOVE THE SKIN YOU'RE IN

    Skin Make -up

Broadly speaking skin is made up of 3 layers, the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous fatty layer. The epidermis is the top layer of skin which holds the stratum corneum and is the barrier to the outside world, the dermis is the middle layer that provides strength and structure and the subcutaneous fatty layer is the bottom layer which insulates the organs from heat and cold.

Differences between Adult and Baby Skin

A baby's epidermis and stratum corneum isn't fully developed which makes their skin 5 times thinner than an adults, it has some advantages but mostly disadvantages.

Advantages - a baby's skin can absorb and hold more water than an adult's skin

Disadvantages - baby's skin loses water faster than an adult's skin. Because their skin can absorb more water it also means they can absorb more potential irritants. When this occurs it can result in dryness, itching, burning, rashes and eczema.

10 Reasons New Mums and Babies Need Organic Skincare

If you're a new mum, then you'll probably be well aware of the fact that nearly everything you do is now centred on your baby.

Here's why you should take time out and make sure that you and your baby get the skincare you both need at this time.

    1. If you're currently pregnant, you're certain to be anxious about what products and ingredients you can and can't use on your skin. You won't want to put anything on your skin that might cause problems for your baby.

    2. Being pregnant takes a lot out of the body, as the main priority is the development of the baby. This means that your skin may have suffered, and you might have lost your natural shine and sparkle. Why not see how natural skincare products can make a difference to your skin and complexion?

    3. After the birth you'll be spending more of your time and attention on your baby then on yourself. You might have a lot to do in the mornings or evening, and not have the time to spend on yourself like you did previously

    4. Using new mum specific skin products, and especially organic ones can help to prevent or lessen the effects of stretch marks.

    5. Although you're now a responsible parent, it's still a good idea to try and make time for yourself and pamper yourself once in a while. Perhaps you could come to an agreement with your partner, or a friend or relative so that they can babysit and you can have a long relaxing bath and some time to yourself occasionally.

    6. Good skincare is essential for everybody, and new babies and new mums are no exception. Your baby is precious and deserves to be looked after properly.

    7. You're likely to be very protective about what your baby wears, and touches so that they don't harm themselves. You wouldn't use harmful or poor quality products on your skin, so why would you on your baby?

    8. Organic products are natural and not full of potentially harmful chemicals that could cause damage later on in life. Because they are made with quality ingredients they will be free from irritants and allergens that can cause people to have adverse reactions to some skincare products.

    9. You'll know full well that a relaxing bath is good way to relax after a hard day, so why not treat yourself and your baby to the best possible skincare made with organic natural ingredients?

    10. You want the best for your baby in all areas of life, so why not start with their skincare? You'll feed them properly and make sure that they get everything else they need, so why would you neglect their skin?

Now you know more about why natural skin care is important, perhaps now is the time to think about organic skin care products for you and your baby.

Organic Baby Skincare

Newborn babies and children have delicate skin that is more likely to suffer environmental stress like pollution, heat, cold and sunburn. Here are a few pointers for an organic and/or natural approach to baby skincare.

    Nappy Rash

Small red spots appearing around baby's bum, groin, and legs generally signals nappy rash. In serious cases the skin may get inflamed or broken - not nice for baby which means not nice for mummy and daddy either! The usual cause of nappy rash is wet or dirty nappies breaking down into ammonia compounds which cause bacterial skin irritation. If you are having some nappy rash issues, try more frequent changing with 5-10 minutes of fresh air and sunlight in between. Definitely avoid acrylic pants and if you can go for organic cotton nappies, do. They are heaps better for baby and the environment. To treat the nasty itch and soreness, try a few drops of organic lavender oil diluted according to the instructions on the bottle and rubbed gently onto that cute little tushy. You could also try bod for bubs' Cowboys and Itchy Bums bum barrier cream for a ready-made blend of essential oils and other beneficial ingredients, including lavender.

    Eczema

Eczema comes along like a side order with asthma, hay fever, and chemical sensitivity. Unfortunately in this case you can't send it back to the kitchen. But that doesn't mean you can't ease the discomfort for your little one. Eczema is abnormally dry skin with inflammation. Some older babies get regions of inflammation with flaking or peeling of the skin, particularly around the face and inner folds of the elbow and knee. Medical treatment usually involves the topical application of steroidal creams which control the inflammation. You could also try a soothing moisturising cream minus the chemicals. Unscented organic or totally natural products are best because anything perfumed or synthetic will only irritate the skin more. Try BABYBEARSHOP's Organic Cheeky Baby Butter. So cute!

    Sun Protection

Protecting baby from the sun is absolutely essential. It's proven that there is an increased risk of developing skin cancers in later life after early childhood exposure to ultra violet radiation. The Cancer Council recommends regularly checking the UV index and becoming familiar with peak exposure periods.

When you have to take baby outside in the sun, all Australian mothers know it is essential to protect babies and children with appropriate sunscreen, hats, and loose fitting outfits made from sun protective materials. However, sunscreens are complex compounds, containing a surprising number of chemicals in addition to their active constituents. These can include synthetic colours and perfumes. Try to find a natural sunscreen such as UV Natural (although I find this one a little greasy), or just cover bub completely with clothing! If you dress your wee one in organic baby clothes, for sunny days make sure you choose loose fitting clothing made from tightly woven natural fibres such as cotton, linen, and hemp. Clothing made from unbleached organic fibres is tougher and less likely to irritate immature and sensitive skin.

Skincare For Children

Have you ever thought about the impact of the products that you are using on your children's skin? Do you assume that because a product is available for sale in a shop that it must have been proved safe by some authorising body? Are you confused about what products you need to use given the overwhelming abundance of options?

The cosmetics industry is currently self-regulating. Research has linked many of the chemical ingredients commonly used in skincare products to health issues such as: reproductive complications, tumours, skin and eye irritations, body development abnormalities (especially in children) and cancer. It is unwise to assume that a cosmetic product is safe because it is available for sale. Unless an ingredient is explicitly banned, then cosmetics companies can pretty much use anything in their products and are also not required to individually list all the ingredients that are contained in a product (this is so that they can protect trade secret formulas). Start reading labels. If what you read on labels makes little sense to you then a couple of really handy resources are a book called The Chemical Maze by Bill Statham and the The Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep cosmetic safety database. Both provide helpful information on the safety or otherwise of chemical ingredients. The book The Chemical Maze comes in a small size so you can easily take it shopping with you if you wish.

Many times advertising convinces us to buy products that we do not even need. Baby-care products especially fall into this category. Our skin is designed to naturally clean itself. This is the role of sebum, a waxy/oily substance produced by our skin. Most babies do not need to be washed with soap on a daily basis. Water is sufficient unless they have been playing in the sand/mud or exploring mum's make-up drawer. If you want you can add a couple of drops of olive oil to your baby's bath water as natural oils cleanse the skin. However, be careful to only use a very small amount or the bath will become slippery.

Alternatively, you can make up some chamomile tea, let it cool slightly and add that to the bathwater. Chamomile soothes and softens the skin and protects against bacterial and fungal infection. Both of these 'cleansers' are particularly good if your baby (or child) has any kind of rashes or eczema. As for moisturiser, it is only needed if baby's skin appears dry and then you can simply use a small amount of a light oil like almond oil. If you are going to purchase baby-care products to use then ensure they contain only natural ingredients and minimal or no fragrance. Babies smell beautiful just the way they are and they need their delicate senses to be unclouded so that they can breathe in the smell of their primary caregivers.

Older children do get a bit grubbier and often need a soap wash, although again not necessarily if they have just been inside all day. If they are not visibly dirty then just a freshen up with water is fine. Harsh soaps, chemical antibacterial cleansers and chemical shower gels disturb our skin's natural oils and acid mantle. It is good to try and keep the skin's natural oils and acid mantle as undisturbed as possible for as long as possible because they provide natural protection. Try using mild soaps made from natural ingredients and teach children to only use soap where they are dirty. This has the added advantage of making the soap last longer thus saving you money. The obvious exception to this is hands. Good hand washing habits are one of the best natural ways to protect your child (and yourself) from infection. However, normal soap and warm water are perfectly sufficient to do this job.

Once children hit their teens they may need to start using specifically designed skincare products for their face (and back) as teenage skin problems such as acne begin to arise. The key thing to remember at this time is to treat the skin gently! Although it may be producing excess oil harsh products that strip oils off the skin may seem beneficial for a while but will eventually make the problem worse as the skin produces even more oil to compensate. It is far more effective to cleanse the skin thoroughly but gently morning and night with skincare products that contain natural herbs and oils that work to balance sebum (oil) production. If your teenager does have moderate to severe acne then get them to avoid using facial scrubs as it is likely that they will spread the infection. The exception to this is blackheads, in which case a gentle scrub can be very helpful. Try adding a drop of peppermint oil to the scrub when it is used as it can help clear congested skin.

Simple skincare that causes the least disruption to the skin's natural systems is best for you and your child. All you really need is something to cleanse the skin when required, and something to lock in moisture and protect the surface of the skin i.e. a moisturiser. For best results, use minimal products, and use the most natural, pure products you can.

Tips for Overall Baby Skincare

Baby's skin is very sensitive. That is why as much as possible thorough care should be provided. Since the baby could not take care of his skin on his own, it is the responsibility of the parents to make sure baby skin would be maintained and kept smooth, clear and very much healthy. But in these days when almost all baby skin care products have synthetic and chemical active ingredients, it is hard to choose and use natural and safe baby skin care goods.

Experts assert that baby skincare should start from the time the mother is conceiving. Yes, babies develop while inside the womb. As an initial and first home for the baby, the mom's womb is where the baby gets first access to nutrients. You know how food minerals and vitamins are essential in making the skin glow and stay healthy.

Here are several simple guidelines that would help naturally and more effectively take care of baby skin.

Be particular about the initial soap and shampoo for the baby's use. When shopping for such products, go for the all-natural ones and those that are highly recommended by the pediatrician and baby skincare experts. It would be advisable if you would prefer organic baby skincare products, though not many people believe such products are really all-natural.

Bathe the baby about three times a week. Contrary to popular belief, bathing the baby everyday is not advisable as the practice may do more harm to baby skin than good. When bathing, you are practically wiping off several natural oil and lipids off the baby skin.

Applying baby oil to baby skin once in a while would be helpful in making the skin smooth. Doing so also helps add up baby skin's natural protective covering.

Do not ever attempt to put on perfume to the baby. Some cologne, especially those with very mild formulations can be tolerable, but perfumes are completely a no-no. That is because all perfumes are made up of the harshest toiletry chemicals that could instantly produce unlikely reaction with baby's skin.

Choose the best brands of baby diaper products. There are numerous diaper products marketed but only a handful is known to be ideal for babies. For this, you could seek expert advice and recommendations from the pediatrician and from other more seasoned moms.

Monitor all clothing and apparel being used by the baby. As you can see, some cloths can be harsh and irritating especially when laundry is not taken care of properly. Using fabric conditioners for the baby's clothing and other things is not advisable since fabric conditioners basically are made of numerous irritants that could easily prompt adverse effects.

Organic Skin Care For Babies

Keep Your Baby's Skin Smooth and Clean with Organic Skin Care Products

When you bring home your new bundle of joy, you bring home a huge responsibility. That little one is relying on you to care for her in every way. Before you rub that baby lotion on her soft, delicate skin, you need to learn a little bit about organic skin care.

Why Organic Skin Care for Babies Is Important

Babies have very soft, sensitive skin. Not only that, but a baby's skin is five times as thin as an adult's skin. This means the products you put on your baby's skin are absorbed into her body, and often quite quickly.

If you read your bottle of baby lotion, do you know what most of the ingredients are? Unless you have an organic or all-natural product, you probably don't. Most common baby products are full of synthetic chemicals, such as sodium lauryl sulfate and triethanolamine. If you cannot pronounce an ingredient, do you really want it to go into your baby's body?

To date there has not been enough research into the long-term effects of exposing babies to these products. We do know that some petroleum-based products contain waxes that coat the skin. This inhibits the skin's natural ability to exchange moisture, which can lead to irritation and discomfort. It is possible that the other synthetic products that are being constantly absorbed into the tiny bodies of most babies are leading to serious diseases in the child's future.

The good news is that there are alternatives to the traditional baby care products. Organic baby care products can be found that do not contain these potentially dangerous chemicals. By turning to nature to care for your baby, you will protect her from potential health hazards that have not yet been discovered.

    Tips for Organic Skin Care

If you are committed to caring for your baby's skin organically, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Your goal in the first six months of your baby's life should be to use as few skin are products as possible. This is not always easy to abide by, because newborns seem to get a lot of rashes. Resist the urge to run to the drug store and buy some cream the first time you notice a rash on your baby's skin. Chances are it is harmless and is not causing your baby any discomfort.

If you do need to use products to help your baby with a rash or other skin problem, choose single-ingredient organic products first. For instance, you can use pure shea butter to moisturize baby's skin. This will allow you to watch for allergies. Since these are single-ingredient products, you will know what caused the allergy.

You may feel that you need to bathe your baby every day. This is actually bad for your baby's skin. A bath two or three times a week is sufficient, and too much bathing could cause your baby's skin to dry out.

Keep your baby away from the sun. Use hats and protective clothing when you are outdoors. Remember, there is no safe sunscreen to use on an infant, so you must keep your baby covered.

After your baby has reached the six-month milestone, add other organic skin care products to his hygiene regimen. Read all labels to make sure that the product is truly natural and organic. Watch your baby closely for signs of an allergy whenever you try something new. Even with organic skincare products, there could be some ingredient that your baby has a sensitivity to.

Once you establish a good skin care routine for your baby, stick to it. Do not let other people or caregivers use products on your baby that you are uncomfortable with. Remember, it is your responsibility to protect your little one, so start from day one with organic skin care for babies.

Toys made from natural and organic products will also offer the same kind of fun which other toys can provide. Together with traditional toys derived from sustainable wood, there are also lots of soft toys which are available. Moreover, it is a common fact that babies tend to put everything inside their mouths, thus, toys should be of zero toxins which are very ideal for children especially the babies.

When you want to purchase various organic toys for your kid, there are several things that have to be taken into consideration so that these toys can really be classified as organic baby toys. If you happen to purchase the toy simply because the label says it is natural, do not take this as something real. Unluckily, there are wooden toys but are not organic since the wood might just been bleached through chemicals so to maintain the natural manifestation. In addition, labels provided must be read cautiously. Make sure that the wood processing in making the toys is entirely natural. No dangerous chemicals applied or devices used in the production that will harm the atmosphere.

Furthermore, in purchasing a wooden toy, it is also necessary to check out the kind of paint that has been used to decorate the item. Paints used should be derived from natural components and colors. Most often than not, if the label says it is lead free so it goes to say that it is safer when compared to other toys. With regards to soft toys which your kids would like to have, be aware that even if the materials may be natural, there is the possibility that chemicals are used during the production in order to protect the material as well as preserve its stuffing. Try to read the labels well and if possible, make some sort of research about the toys.

Aside from the organic baby toys, it is also important to provide your children with everything that is organic such as organic baby lotion, organic baby shampoo, organic skincare products and many more. Having these will somehow keep your child safe from hazardous chemicals and materials and avoid potential health hazards. Take note that even food for the babies should also be organic in order to elude pesticides in food. The Internet can be of great help when determining whether or not the toys are organic.

Vegan Skincare Natural

Natural skincare is widely promoted as safe, healthy, even preservative free and therefore "better" for your skin. I am sure most of us by now are aware that natural doesn't necessarily mean what the word implies. But is natural therefore bad?

What about vegan skincare? Is it natural? Is vegan a "safe" alternative?

Firstly let me clarify one thing: there is no such thing as preservative free skincare available commercially. Firstly it would be against the law and secondly it would be a health hazard if not a death trap. Anybody selling skincare commercially needs to obtain a safety certificate from a qualified chemist and he or she will not issue that certificate if a skincare product isn't adequately preserved. Unfortunately most preservatives carry the unjustified label of being "toxic" - I am not sure who put this rumour out into the public domain and why it has caught on so readily.

Now, take food. Most of our commercially produced food items are preserved in one way or another and the fact that something is organic doesn't mean it isn't preserved. Would you for example feed you child anything that might be affected by mould or bacteria? No. Yet, would you be happy if upon opening a mashed organic apple mousse you'd find mould lingering on it? No. Hence you accept that even baby food is preserved, albeit with food preservatives that have been proven to be safe and effective. Or you go and prepare your baby's and your own food yourself. If you have the time that is.

Where am I heading with this? Good question - I am heading right on into the subject of vegan skincare. Personally I prefer my skincare to be free from animal by products such as fetus cells, blood cells, brain cells, musk, liver enzymes, gall bladder extracts and so forth. I don't want any snake venom in my skincare (often used as a botox substitute) nor do I fancy crushed and milled animal bones.

All of the above are absolutely not necessary and from what I know they are not proven to have any positive effects on the human skin.

What has been proven to have an effect are plants. Herbs for example have been used since time and memorial to cure illnesses and improve brain function for example. We have very sophisticated technology nowadays that can extract active ingredients from plants and these have been tested for their effectiveness and many have been found to be very potent. Does that mean they are "natural"? It depends on your point of view. Basically - and I am sure you have heard this many times before as well - no substance is "natural" if not used in moderation. Everything taken in excess can kill you. Coffee, alcohol, salt, sugar, tobacco, drinking too much water, using essential oils neat on your skin, herbal extracts taken in excess, red meat...really, anything can kill you.

Most vegan skincare products put the emphasis on vegan rather than on natural. With good reason - most vegan manufacturers know and admit that there is no such thing as 100% natural vegan or organic skincare because many base ingredients in skincare may be of plant origin or mineral matter, yet they could not be classified as "natural" in the original sense. And many vegan manufacturers still use parabens as preservatives in their skincare or silicone or synthetically created aromas because they are seen as safe and - in the case of the latter - classified as anti allergens (for people who react to essential oils for example). Cost is also always a factor when making skincare and in the current climate we all want to save money and go for the cheapest yet best option when it comes to looking after our skin.

However - I believe that if we want great quality, non toxic, animal by product free skincare then we should opt for the most honest yet safe labels. We should inform ourselves about what each ingredient stands for and what it's purpose is but we should also accept that certain ingredients are a necessity for the sake of a product's safety. We should be able to talk to the manufacturer and ask perfectly legitimate questions about ingredients which he or she must be able to answer in a timely fashion and without using jargon (unfortunately the law requires that ingredients are listed on labels with their Latin names, the so called INCI). And we should forget about wanting it all in one product - natural, organic, vegan, preservative free, bio dynamic, pure, effective..... What we should ask for is a product that is indeed what it says it is, does what it says it does without making hyped up claims and doesn't cost the earth - literally!
